A Busy Week
October 02, 2006
Did I just blink and miss September? That month went fast!
Yes, it is October and with the beautiful fall foliage and change
in weather comes a busy month at school. Just this week we have
two big events-Open House and Picture Day!
Open House
is Thursday night. Open House is a casual evening when your child
gets to lead you and your family around the school and introduce you
to all his teachers. He'll show you his favorite activities in the
classroom too. In our room, you can try your hand at cookie stacking
like we did a couple of weeks ago. Can you beat your child's record?
Stop in for a bite of homemade apple pie.
Don't forget to sign
up for a parent -teacher conference at Open House too. The official
conferences are in the beginning of December. However, we can conference
anytime you would like before the "official" meetings. I am always
available with a day's notice.
Friday is Picture Day. Get
your child all spiffed up for the big event! Just remember we also
have gym on Friday so if your child wears fancy dress shoes be sure
to include sneakers in her backpack. There is no school
on Monday, October 9th in observation of Columbus Day.
On Tuesday, October 10th, the Palmyra Fire Dept. comes to school for
a visit and tour of their fire engines.
The trips to the
pool last week were quite successful. I heard rave reviews from all
the teachers on what a wonderful job your children did swimming.
There were very few tears and lots of smiles. I'm really impressed
with how well this group handles new situations!
Last week we also started fall activities with a mini-math unit on apples.
The kids picked an apple out of a bag and graphed the color of it. We
measured the circumference of our apples with yarn then compared the
length of our strings. Next we used two types of scales to compare
the weight of our apples and to find the exact weight. Lastly, we
predicted how many seeds were in our apples then peeled and counted
them. At the art center, the children created beautiful "stained glass"
apples. Check them out on our windows at Open House. This week the kids
will make a picture of the life cycle of an apple tree and we'll make apple pies.
Of course this week, we'll be learning lots more about letters,
words, and numbers.
