In Kindergarten, one of our major celebrations is the 100th Day of School. Leading up to this milestone, students learn a great deal about larger numbers. Students begin to understand that counting by 10s is an efficient method for counting large sets. Students build mental pictures of what 100 things look like (100 milk cartons, 100 pennies, 100 children, 100 square feet). Children begin to see logic to the sequence 10, 20, 30, 40, etc.

Our 100th Day celebration had a cowboy theme. We had a stomping good time at our Hundred Day Hoedown. The day got off to a great start when the children arrived wearing their cowboy boots, jeans, and button down shirts. They shared their homemade collections of 100. After sharing, the class split into centers for necklace making, hat decorating, paper stamping and coloring. These activities gave students plenty of practice sorting and counting.
