Homework Calendar
Homework in kindergarten???? You betcha! If you look at the assignments provided on the homework calendar you can see these are age appropriate activities. There are three purposes for the homework calendar. First, it gives the child a bit of responsibility. The child needs to be take the BEE book out of his/her backpack and open up to the calendar then getting a family member to read the assignment. Second, it provides the child an opportunity at home to reinforce skills practiced in school. And lastly, it shows parents the skills and topics we are learning in school and helps you stay more connected to our day to day work. I make a big deal out of completed homework. It is marked on a poster and children are rewarded at the end of the year for perfect homework completion (returning all ten calendars signed by both the student and the grown up helper). Instill in your child right from the beginning the importance of a daily homework routine, being responsible and finishing a task.
At the beginning of each month, you will get any papers you need to complete each homework assignment for the month. Keep these in a safe place. Keep the calendar right in the BEE Book so it doesn't get lost. Mark off each assignment your child completes with you. At the end of the month, both you and your child will sign the paper and return it to school.
Penny Sundays
You'll notice on the September calendar that Sundays entail the use of pennies in a cup. Please find a cup and a bunch of pennies for your child, let your child find a place to keep the cup. This will be your child's weekly counting cup. Sometimes your child will be grabbing a handful of pennies, estimating then counting the handful. Other times, she will be counting all the pennies in the cup. Later in the year, your child will make patterns with the pennies and add other coins to the collection. Each month there will be new Penny Sunday assignments but all year long your child is going to be using this money cup so set it up right in September.
